Vehicle Story
The BMW Z4 succeeded the very successful Z3 in 2003, arriving first as the E85 roadster, followed in 2006 by the E86 Coupé. It was much better to drive than the outgoing Z3, thanks to a new platform that was larger yet lighter, with a stiffer suspension and more powerful 2.5-litre and 3.0-litre straight-six engines. BMW later added 2.0-litre, 2.2-litre and a 3.2-litre engines to the line-up, and the M54 engines were replaced with more rev-happy N52 for 2006. These remain popular with enthusiasts for their sound track, driveability and relatively reliable nature.
Despite the E85/E86’s design being finished before the millennium, the crisp lines still look remarkably fresh today, even as it verges towards “modern classic” territory. Nearly 200,000 were built (all in the USA) before production ended in 2008, and more than 90% of them were roadsters, making the Coupé relatively rare.
