Vehicle Story
Introduced in 1984, the W124 (and its associated -124 family of vehicles) was conceived at the height of Mercedes-Benz’s ‘bulletproof’ period. Each component was seemingly over-engineered to ensure longevity, reliability, and survival far beyond its expected use-by date. The number of W124s still in daily service worldwide, both in personal and commercial use, is a testament to this.
With a seemingly endless R&D budget, Bruno Sacco in charge of design and M-B’s engineers on top form, the W124 was a success from the word go, and also incorporated several cutting-edge technologies of the time. For example, the bodywork had one of the lowest drag coefficients of any production vehicle at the time, folding rear headrests, a single eccentric wiper arm, a self-latching rear door on the T (wagon) model, and fuel injection on the vast majority of models.
It was face-lifted in 1989 and again in 1993 to keep pace with the rest of the M-B range, both aesthetically and mechanically. One of the models produced was the CE, a coupé version of what has become one of the most successful platforms from Mercedes-Benz.
The coupe's design exuded elegance then and retains its timeless appeal today, outlasting many contemporaries that have aged rapidly. 35 years after the face-lifted version made its debut, the 300CE still looks fantastic with its pillarless windows and elegant styling.
