Vehicle Story

The Mercedes SLK, meaning Sportlich, leicht and Kurz, was the competition for the BMW Z4 and the Porsche Boxster, initially introduced in 1994 the first iteration’s production ran 10 years until 2004, winning ‘North American Car of the Year ‘97’ and coming top ten in Car and Driver’s Ten Best for the same year.

Mercedes continued this success with the car’s second iteration internally designated the R171. Mercedes knuckled down with this second model however, giving it a new muscular body and styling cues from the McLaren Mercedes.

Bringing with it some revisions and innovations over the first model, the R171 was longer, had more high strength steel, featured many safety additions and given a quicker, more clever folding roof as well as journalist’s favourite innovation ‘Airscarf’ which was jets of warm air aimed at the neck to keep you warm with the roof down.

Vehicle Overview

The Mercedes has had only two owners during its life with the original owner, who interestingly was a world renown astronomer, purchasing the car as a retirement present. The current owner was taken by the car’s manufacturer added AMG goodies as well as the way the car had been treated under its previous ownership.

Since buying the car last November, it has been enjoyed and some outstanding work that needed doing has been complete such as the subframe replacement recall work for added peace of mind. Like so many of us who enjoy the automotive hobby, the current owner has found another car, and with space at a premium, its sadly time for the Mercedes to be sold on to another loving owner.

Exterior

The paintwork around the car is in great condition, black shows up every mark, scuff and chip on a car making it near impossible to hide any imperfections. The SLK does have some general wear and tear around the usual spots but its within expected levels for a car of this age and mileage. The main area to note is the front bumper, which looks to have been caught on a speed bump with that low hanging aero.

Other than that, everything else seems to be in order with minimal marks, scuffs, dents or chips around the paintwork. The glass around the car looks to be in good condition too, as do the lights and trim. The wheels are in great condition having been refurbished only a few weeks ago, with 2 new rear tyres to make the deal sweeter.

Everything is reported to be working in terms of electrics, including the folding roof. The simple colour specification here gives the car a real presence on the road and with continued care and a little polish here and there, we’re sure it’ll keep on shining with its next owner.

Interior

Inside the Mercedes and things are very clean and tidy. Black leather seats with red piping is an optional extra from factory we’re informed as is the AMG wrap around skirting on the exterior. Clearly visible in the hardwearing leather covered seats is the famous Airscarf vents in the headrest.

The hard-wearing interior really looks as though it hasn’t been used much at all, apart from the odd boot scuff on the plastic of the lower dash sections on the driver’s side there is no real signs to show any excessive wear and tear in the interior at all. The dash is in great condition as is the steering wheel along with the common wear area of the driver’s side seat bolster.

In the boot, the folding roof mechanism doesn’t even look to have any dust on it and is reported to continue to be smooth and as quick as the 22 second manufacture claim. The luggage space also doesn’t look to have been used as it remains clean and without staining or damage from what we can see. We’d imagine this to be a wonderful place to spend time whilst crunching the miles or attacking the corners on a warm summer’s day.

Mechanical

Looking under the bonnet the visual condition of the car leaves no cause for concern from our mechanically untrained eye. No signs of fluid leaks, split hoses, exposed wires, strut top corrosion or dodgy bodges. Judging by the service history and maintenance record also it would be safe to assume the powerplant is in good health.

The SLK 200 is powered by a 1.8L supercharged inline 4, giving 161 bhp with a 0-60 mph of 7.9 seconds. The optional 5G-Tronic automatic transmission has been selected here which was received well by journalist stating its kickdown upon acceleration was much quicker than other previous auto boxes.

Much of the underside of the car is hidden with plastic coverings, and as previous mentioned, the subframe has been replaced by Mercedes this October in response to a recall/warranty issue. The other components that we can see however looks to be in good condition visually and the latest MOT only had an advisory for some play in the offside front of the steering rack tie rod.

History Highlights

The SLK comes with a good amount of paperwork detailing the work and maintenance it has had during its 18-year life, first off, the V5 is present detailing 1 previous owner, along with our full HPI report as part of our housekeeping for all cars.

There are various paper MOT certificates with TNT Service Centre in Nottingham completing much of the work on the car during its time. This includes new tyres, a new N/S/F brake caliper and various other routine maintenance bits such as fluid and filter changes.

Along with the service history is the owner manuals and service books with 8 stamps for the following mileages: - 15,066 / 23,732 / 27,512 / 29450 / 31,908 / 35,215 / 40,157 / 44,418 miles. This is bundled in a fabric wallet and the car comes with two remote fob keys.

What We Think

The SLK is a great sports convertible, really taking the fight in the market to the Z4 and the Boxster. This one has been specced rather nicely with a simple but effective colour combo and a classy interior.

It’s service history gives evidence of 2 careful and contentious owners with regular maintenance being completed in a timely manner along with the peace of mind of having the recall work completed. The R171 had real road presence and paved the way for the latest model, this is a great example with a lot going for it, with some room left to make it your own, we’re sure it’ll bring plenty of enjoyment to its next owner.
