“ The Stuttgart Supercar – Well Maintained ”

The Porsche 928 offers a great entry point into Porsche ownership.

Vehicle Story

When the Porsche 928 was first launched in 1978, engineering aficionados swooned, automotive journalists applauded, car designers wept tears of pure envy, and, of course, 911 fanatics were appalled.

Then, it looked like nothing we’d seen before. Now, it looks like nothing we’ve seen since.

The 928 was, and is, an engineering, design, performance, and usability masterclass. But it is also practical, usable, and so well-engineered, even by Porsche’s high standards, that it’s as comfortable thundering down an Autobahn as it is driving to your local shops.

Porsche introduced a refreshed 928 S into the European market in the 1980 model year. The 928 S reached North America in the summer of 1982 (model year 1983).

The main change for the 928 S was under the bonnet, where a revised 4.7-litre engine was used. More powerful European versions of the 4.7-litre V8 boasted 296 bhp and were upgraded to 306 bhp for the 1984 model year.

Porsche revised the North American 928 S for 1985, replacing the engine with a new 5.0-litre DOHC unit sporting four valves per cylinder and producing 288 bhp in order to make up for some of the performance lost to US emissions controls.

Vehicle Overview

The Porsche 928 offers a great entry point into Porsche ownership without the expense of a 911. While it lacks the rear-engine dynamics of a 911, this front-engined supercar became a design icon in the mid-1980s.

This well-maintained 1985 model seems to have been carefully looked after. Each owner has contributed to its roadworthiness by ensuring regular MoT tests have been carried out, despite covering very few miles in recent years. Its iconic design, ahead of its time, makes it a fantastic purchase in today's market. So, if you missed experiencing the 928 during its prime, now is the perfect opportunity.

Exterior

Finished in what's believed to be the original colour of Grand Prix White, the 928 presents quite well. There are some signs of a past respray, most noticeable around the quarter window seals, but then again, the car is now 39 years old, so a few cosmetic improvements over the years are acceptable.

The bumper and lower spoiler fit well at the front of the car. Both indicators and fog lights are free from any splits or cracks, and the cool 80s pop-up headlights work as they should. The large wings align well against the bonnet with an equal gap and, once open, the bonnet stays in place using the gas struts. The top-tint windscreen has no noticeable excessive scratches, and the aluminium trims appear in good condition with no dings or dents.

From the side, both doors look to align with an equal gap. The door window rubbers, which have started to perish, show some signs of age, but the windows look to be in good order. The car is fitted with a sunroof, which does operate correctly.

At the rear end, everything is in good condition, with a nice-fitting rear panel that shows no signs of distortion. All of the lights are in good order, and the spoiler looks in good order.

Fitted with 17” Porsche Cup-II style alloy wheels, these have some minor cosmetic marks, but nothing excessive and certainly nothing which couldn’t be freshened up by your local wheel refurbisher. The matching tyres have a good amount of tread remaining.

Interior

If you fancy indulging yourself in a spot of 80s luxury, the 928 is the place to do it. The black leather seats are in very good condition for their age and are reported to be working correctly, allowing you to get the perfect driving position with the electrically adjustable seats. Both door cards are free from damage, and there have been additional speakers installed, improving the audio quality. The rear seats are also in good order with just minor patina; there are also some upgraded rear speakers to match the front.

Looking across the dashboard, apart from a few minor imperfections, there is no real damage to mention. The instruments are in good condition and are working correctly when the car is running, and no warning lights are displayed. The odometer shows a reading of 126,096 miles. There is a small amount of age-related wear to the lettering on the stalks, but the rest of the switchgear and heater controls look to be in good condition. There is an upgraded JVC CD head-unit fitted, and the switches behind the gear lever were replaced in June 2023.

The carpets are in good condition for the 928's age; a set of factory mats is fitted, which have minor wear but are easy to replace. The boot carpet is worn and has a small tear. Under the carpet, the boot floor looks in good order. The space-saver spare wheel is present, along with a jack and wheel brace.

Mechanical

Fitted with the wonderful 4.7-litre V8, this produces 310bhp and 295Ib-ft of torque. The S2 had a huge 90bhp improvement over the original release in 1983. As can be seen in our video, this fires up without hesitation and runs smoothly with no issues reported.

The automatic gearbox has a very slight amount of clutch slip, but the change is smooth and the 928 pulls well through the gears.

Sitting pretty, the 928 handles as you would expect, handling like a sports car in the corners and soaking up the road like a cruiser. No untoward noises can be heard from either corner of the car.

Stopping the 928 has been improved with a set of grooved discs at the front. These help bring the car to a stop in a straight line, and no issues have been reported.

Taking a look at the underside of the 928, this appears to be in good order, with no areas of corrosion spotted.

History Highlights

With service history dating back to the early 2000s and service stamps even further back to 1986, the 928 appears to have been well-maintained. In January 2000, both cylinder heads were skimmed and rebuilt, which, based on the history, would have been at approximately 100,000 miles.

A reconditioned gearbox was also fitted in May 2003. More recently, a full service was carried out in June 2023 at 126,056 miles, just 40 miles ago.

The car has a current MoT, which is valid until 27th February 2025, and it passed with no advisories.

What We Think

We present the Porsche 928, designed to replace the iconic Porsche 911 with a sports car that combines performance, a V8 soundtrack, and a refined luxury interior. Yes, it does have all those qualities, but unfortunately, it never knocked the 911 from the top spot in the Porsche lineup.

Luckily for you, this also means prices haven't risen like other model Porsches, making the 928 excellent value for money - and we estimate that this example will sell for £10,000 - £14,000.
