“ Formerly Owned by Radiohead Band Member ”

Picked up by one of the band members from HR Owen in 2000, the Audi was tasked with being a commuter car ferrying to and from musical recordings and studios and such. As the band was based in Oxford at the time, it is no surprise that the mileage remains low and even now the car remains in the county it has spent its whole life in.

Vehicle Story

The Audi TT needs no introduction being a familiar sight on UK roads since 1998 in all its different guises and updates over 3 generations. Sharing powertrains, suspension layouts and platforms with stablemates such as the A3, Golf and Octavia gives a reassuring feeling of quality and development whereas the styling from California based Volkswagen group design centre gives a sleek and agile feel, derived from the successes of NSU’s racing success at the infamous Isle of Man TT.

First generation engine packages came in the form of 1.8L turbocharged inline 4s with power outputs being 178, 222 and 225 hp with the latter getting a large capacity turbocharger pushing the power figure up. The latter version also came with the Haldex Traction enabled four-wheel drive, or ‘Quattro’ as standard, as well as the 6 speed manual gearbox.

Vehicle Overview

This car not only has the higher rated 1.8L inline four, dubbed the ‘225’ but it only has 48,000 miles on the clock for its 24 years on the road. Add to that its one previous owner and it’s an attractive proposition, then you find out the previous owner was part of the internationally acclaimed rock band Radiohead and it adds another level or intrigue to this handsome Bauhaus inspired coupe.

After a while of diligently performing its daily driver duties, the car was parked up outside and forgotten, meaning its condition deteriorated over the years it sat stationary. Fast forward a few decades and the car was given a mechanical overhaul in 2022, taken to Brightwell Garage in Wallingford, the Audi was given some much needed mechanical TLC. After that the poor thing sat once more until the current owner, The Motor Grid, got their hands on the car, with the coupe looking in a sorry state, The Motor Grid set about unearthing the diamond beneath the tired exterior. A cosmetic glow up later and the Audi looks a million dollars once again, there is even a short video showing what the Audi looked like before on The Motor Grid’s TikTok channel.

Exterior

This Audi has lived a life and the current owner makes no point of hiding the fact that it was a bit unloved before they got a hold of it and afforded it a cosmetic makeover, the rock and roll lifestyle isn’t one synonymous with fastidious car care after all.

Looking at the car now however, you’d be shocked at its transformation with the stunning silver paintwork highlighting the superb design all round. There might be the odd paint flaw here and there but it’s only down to wear and tear and this car know presents wonderfully. Those familiar with VAG products from this time period will know they wear their mileage and years badly if not treated right.

Luckily a serious valet and detail was enough to get this car shining again and its done wonders for the overall look of the car. The current owner has replaced some things that were too far gone however, with the Audi now having a brand-new roof and motorised wind deflector as well as a respray for the rear half of the car.

The wheels are new and uprated items too, being the final touch to give the car it’s purposeful stance it now has. Windows were given new regulators and the rest of the exterior was given a polish and shine, such as the headlights which are now crystal clear. The Audi now wouldn’t look out of place in a showroom and would make a wonderful addition to any driveway, garage or even small collection.

Interior

During it’s time with The Motor Grid, the car has had all exterior panels removed as well as the entire interior for cleaning and repair where necessary. This means that the cabin space is in wonderful condition with the leather seats showing very little signs of wear and the trim and carpet looks to be in fine condition also.

The large dash looks to be in good condition too, free from scratches or cracks with the only thing we can see being the small scuff on the brush aluminium TT nameplate on the centre console, consider it a rockstar’s signature, along with the tongue in cheek addition of the guitar pick on the driver’s seat in our photo gallery.

It hasn’t just been a clean-up and ship out job from The Motor Grid however with a few parts being sorted in the interior, such as the previously mentioned wind deflector and window regulators. There has been a new wiper motor installed, repairs to the dashboards LEDs, that new roof of course and new heated seat switch along with the temperature sensor.

All this means that the interior of this TT presents in fantastic condition and we’re sure it would be a joyous place to be for the new owner.

Mechanical

In terms of the mechanicals for the Audi, there has been significant work done to the car both from Brightwell Garage and The Motor Grid, all of which is detailed in the photo gallery on the great service record this car has. Highlights include however, replacement front top mounts, front and rear drop links, new cambelt and water pump along with a fluid and filter service.

Once in the hands of The Motor Grid, the car received another fluid and filter service, a lateral yaw sensor, rear subframe treatment, tracking and brake discs as well as a few other tidy up bits here and there.

This results in a strong mechanical condition as the seller informs us, coupled with the low mileage, the TT remains tight, and power is responsive from the top of the range 225hp package.

History Highlights

Even though the car had been parked up for so long the service history is very impressive, with all but the last two service stamps being from Audi main dealers. The last two are from Brightwell Garage which is a VW, Audi, Skoda, Seat specialist and the current owners, The Motor Grid.

The original owners’ manuals remain along with a stack of invoices and receipts the car has gather during its 24 years on the road. Please see the photo gallery for more details but this is one of the more reassuring service history’s we have seen.

What We Think

Audi’s TT made such an impression on the public when it was introduced in the late 90’s that it continued production up until late last year due to dwindling sales of two-door coupes.

This example is not only low owners, low miles and has a good service history but also comes with a great back story appealing to not only petrolheads but rock and roll fans too. We’re sure the new owner is going to be very pleased with this car.
