“ Strong History Record – Modest Mileage ”

Recently recommissioned and boasting a long and advisory-free MoT, this BMW Z4 Sport Coupé Si Sport is finished in the classic colour combination of grey metallic with a black leather interior.

Vehicle Story

Designed by Anders Warming and first shown at the 2002 Paris Motor Show, the E85 Z4 Roadster was offered with the choice of either a 2.5-litre or 3.0-litre petrol engine along with the option of a five- or six-speed manual, five-speed automatic, or six-speed SMG-II automated manual.

The E86 Coupé arrived three years later in Frankfurt, with the two-door bodyshell incorporating a useful hatchback into the boot. It also added torsional rigidity, benefiting both handling and ride. The double-bubble roof also gives more headroom than a Roadster with the roof up, making the Coupé the car of choice for keen and/or tall drivers.

On both models the rear-wheel drive chassis is suspended by Macpherson struts on the front and multi-link suspension on the rear, which means the Z4's handling is exceptional, something weight-saving measures such as a magnesium hood frame and aluminium bonnet and suspension components contribute to.

Z4M aside, the Coupé was only offered with the 3.0-litre, straight-six, 265bhp/232lb.ft engine, which produces enough thrust to see it pass 62mph in 5.6 seconds on its way to a top speed of 155mph.

Vehicle Overview

Recently recommissioned and boasting a long and advisory-free MoT, this BMW Z4 Sport Coupé Si Sport is finished in the classic colour combination of grey metallic with a black leather interior.

First registered in 2007, ‘FE07 XPG’ has been in the care of the seller since July 2018 as part of a small collection. We’ve sold a few of his cars over the years and are always impressed with their provenance and condition – and this one is no different.

He’s kept it in dry storage during that time, covering only around 3,000 miles. Its odometer reading of under 54,000 miles is backed up by comprehensive service and MoT records, and, if that weren’t enough, it’s also one of the later Si Sport models with the revised N52K ‘black top’ engine and six-speed automatic transmission.

Exterior

The coachwork is very well preserved and free of dents, dinks, and other damage. It’s also free of ripples along the flanks, and all four corners are untouched, which adds up to a suitably impressive canvas for the grey metallic paintwork to shine.

And what a look the shade gives. Gleaming and free of obvious and significant flaws, its hewn-from-solid look is backed up by excellent badges, window glass, lamp lenses, and trim.

Both numberplates were supplied by Vines, the same folk who serviced it in 2012, which suggests (although it doesn’t prove) that the BMW hasn’t been involved in a front or rear collision.

(Oh, and please don't worry about the gap you can see at the bonnet on the video. The photos show the reality and it seems that our videographer didn’t close it properly when he shot the video. He’s now on the naughty step…)

As we’ll go on to mention later, new rear dampers have been fitted only recently, and the suspension and ten-spoke, 18-inch alloy wheels give the Z4 a suitably sporting stance.

Those wheels, which are in a good condition with only the odd light scrape, are also fitted with Bridgestone tyres on the rear, and Pirelli P-Zero on the front.

As for work to do, the offside rear and front tyres are both date-stamped 2012 and are age-related perishing, so could do with being replaced. Given the Z4’s competence at high-speed shenanigans – and the benefits four matching tyres would bring – you might like to budget to get all four replaced so you’re starting from a consistent baseline.

And, if you’re something of a perfectionist – and if so, this is the car for you – then this example suffers from the common and well-documented issue of condensation building up in the front fog lights. The seller assures us they work perfectly but given how good everything else is we can see the new owner will probably want to fit new ones at some point.

Interior

Look, it’s a pampered BMW with fewer than 54,000 miles under its belt, so you can probably guess what the cabin is like, can’t you?

The deeply bolstered and electrically adjustable black leather sports seats are still firm and supportive, the lettering on the instruments and controls is still bright white, and the door cards, carpets and headlining are all excellent.

It’s also a more practical cockpit than you might think. We’ve touched on the benefits of having more headroom already but there are also plenty of cubbyholes and netting pockets for storage, pop-out cup holders, and air-conditioning and electric windows.

You also get a Sport button for the automatic gearbox, which does a very credible job of turning the Z4 from a boulevard cruiser into a harder-edged sportscar. You can also intervene and take full control of gear changing duties yourself, should you find yourself howling along a country road at dawn.

The boot’s a little bigger than you’ll find in the Roadster too, and this one is beautifully presented. The retractable cover also works, and the tool kit looks to be unused.

As for wear, there are some rubbing marks to the steering wheel and the bolsters on the driver’s seat have softened, just a little.

That’s all though, and you could live with that, eh?

Mechanical

The Z4’s service history is recorded in the history file as follows:

  • 22.02.2007 – pre-delivery inspection by Sytner Leicester
  • 20.03.2009 and 19,655 miles – service by Douglas Park BMW
  • 29.05.2012 and 30,556 miles – service by Vines of Redhill BMW
  • 04.06.2014 and 43,943 miles – service by Partridge of Hampshire BMW
  • 18.08.2015 and 49,000 miles – new front and rear brake discs and pads by Partridge of Hampshire BMW
  • 10.05.2017 and 49,928 miles – service by Partridge of Hampshire BMW including new wishbones and bushes and rear brake pipes
  • 15.08.2019 and 52,333 miles – service by Partridge of Hampshire BMW
  • 03.03.2021 and 53,207 miles – service by BMSC Blandford
  • 18.03.2024 and 53,852 miles – service by M Hudd Auto Specialists including new rear dampers and new brake pipes at a cost of £776

As you can see, it starts and revs well and does it all with a fruity exhaust note and almost uncanny smoothness, but that’s what you get when careful curation and meticulous servicing meet German engineering.

The engine bay is very good, and if you’re looking for a job then the only thing we can see you might like to do is to replace the odd rusty fastener.

The underside is excellent overall, and while you might like to spray something like Lanoguard on the suspension components, we can’t see anything more troubling than that.

History Highlights

The Z4’s MoT certificate is valid until March 2025 and the recent recommissioning work, during which the seller had everything the MoT tester had mentioned put right, means it was issued with no advisories.

The recent Vehicle History Check is clear, and it comes with two keys, the BMW book pack, a bunch of expired MoT certificates, and plenty of old invoices.

What We Think

Modern classics like this offer the discerning driver an awful lot for the money; with a degree of performance and reliability that’s almost unknown among more traditional collector cars, this is something you can use and admire without having to get grease under your fingernails every weekend.

Even better, our estimate is between £10,000 and £15,000, which means it’s probably going to sell for less than the cost of a bargain-basement family hatchback – and when you factor in future residuals, it might end up being a very cheap car indeed…

And that’s assuming it even reaches five figures because the owner is so confident in the quality of his car that he’s offering it with no reserve, so it’s going to sell from the very first bid.

No *checks calendar*, it’s not Christmas. It just feels like it.
